description 1986 1980-95 "News International dispute, 1986" [BW0149], 1986, Trades Union Congress In January 1986, the News International Group owned by Rupert Murdoch, sacked 5,500 workers for refusing to sign new working arrangements which included moving his printing works from Fleet Street to Wapping in East London. This poster, which features a cartoon by Tony Hall, publicises the demonstration and march from Tower Hill to Wapping organised by the South East Region TUC and the Joint May Day Committee on May 1, 1986. The print unions called for a boycott of 'The Sun', 'News of the World', 'The Times' and 'The Sunday Times'. The dispute went on for over a year and there were several violent confrontations with police on the picket line. The unions finally withdrew from the dispute in February 1987.
