"James Callaghan 1912-2005" [BW0036], Trades Union Congress
While working as a tax inspector, James Callaghan helped to establish the Association of Officers of Taxes and became a member of its National Executive. In 1936, he was appointed a full-time union official and to the post of Assistant Secretary of the Inland Revenue Staff Federation. He became MP for Cardiff South in 1945. He became a minister in the 1964 Labour Government and was the only Prime Minister to have held all three leading Cabinet positions - Chancellor of the Exchequer, Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary - prior to becoming Prime Minister in 1976.
Callaghan resigned as leader of the Labour Party on 15 October 1980 after losing the 1979 General Election and was created Baron Callaghan of Cardiff in 1987. |
