description 2013 "Crew, Peter", 2013, HistoryTalk Peter worked for Crossfield Electronics from 1961- 1966. He was an engineer in a company of about 200 workers. He started in the installation department working in Fleet Street and then moved to the Design & Development Department doing phototype setting until 1980. He moved around from one newspaper to another. Describes working in this print related industry and notes the absence of black workers on the shop floor at this time. He installed colour- control equipment on rotary printing presses and this change led to disputes with the unions. When he left Fleet Street he was involved with typesetters rather than printers. Describes various technical aspects of the introduction of new computer technology. He moved into computing in 1980. Peter was a member of the Association of Scientific Workers (ASCW) and then the Association of Technical & Managerial Staff (ASTMS) following a merger. He was also a member of the ETU. He was brought up in a socialist- leaning family and understood the need for trade unions but he was ‘moderate’ trade unionist. To work alongside printers you had to be in a trade union. He was a member of a print union chapel and notes the various print unions such as NATSOPA and SOGAT. In his clip Peter talks about how he kept up with the change in technology for his jobs.
