The Women's Trade Union League (WTUL) established a Potteries Fund as part of its campaign against the use of lead in the manufacture of pottery. The Fund paid for an officer from the League to live in Staffordshire to support workers suffering from the effects of lead poisoning. The worker organised convalescence and "electric baths" at hospitals in Wolverhampton and elsewhere, arranged education and training for children blinded by their work, and where necessary found alternative work away from the industry . At various times , the WTUL officers in the Pottery District were Ada Chew, Ruth DuCane and Mrs Dickie.
