He became interested in liberal politics in the 1860s and campaigned for the 1867 Reform Act. In the 1880s, he worked closely with William Morris. In 1884, he joined the Social Democratic Federation and later the Socialist League and contributed illustrations for 'Justice' and the 'Commonwealth' He is best known in the Labour movement for his 'cartoons' for May Day which were reproduced in many languages and became the inspiration for an unknown number of banners, posters and emblems until the 1930s.
