description 1916 1914-1918 "'The Worker', 8 January 1916" [T0246.jpg], 1916 Organ of the Clyde Workers' Committee (CWC). The front page article is written by William Gallagher, leader of the CWC who was imprisoned for sedition in 1916 and later for incitement to riot after the events of Bloody Friday in 1919. He later played an influential role in the formation of the Communist Party of Great Britain and was Communist MP for West Fife, 1935-1950. The article criticises a visit to Clydeside by the Munitions Minister, David Lloyd George, to explain government policy on the "dilution of skilled labour". A plan to introduce semi- and unskilled workers into munitions work and the Munitions Act 1915, which set aside many union workshop practices and removed the right of munitions workers to leave their jobs without a Leaving Certificate.
