description "Affiche uitgegeven in 1995 door Amnesty International voor mensenrechten. Afbeelding: foto van betogende vrouwen met een spandoek waarop: POR EL DERECHO A LA VIDA. NO MÁS AMENAZAS A CONAVIGUA (Voor het recht op leven. Geen bedreigingen meer aan CONAVIGUA - Coordinadora Nacional de Viudas de Guatemala). Tekst: HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS. THE FRONTLINE (sic). Human rights defenders are the men and women on the front lines of the struggle to realise the ideal proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 — that all people should be free from fear and want. Defenders come from all walks of life; they can be lawyers, teachers, doctors, trade unionists, journalists, peasant leaders, students, relatives of victims or any of the many others who try to protect the weak and hold the powerful to account. Defenders are often a victim's only source of advice, support and comfort, and their work can span the whole range of human rights. They investigate and document individual cases; speak out on controversial human rights issues; take legal action against perpetrators and governments; promote human rights education; or mobilize their communities in campaigns to stop the violations. Defenders frequently put their lives on the line to protect others, and themselves become victims of violations. They are both Amnesty International's colleagues and our greatest asset — our work would grind to a halt without the support,, cooperation and information provided by these dedicated and courageous people. They act on behalf of all of us, and we are obliged to ensure that their work continues. FULL TEXT AVAILABLE AT AMSAB-ISH"
