description 1953 1951-1960 "Boycott of D.C. Thomson newspapers, 1953" [BW0197], 1953, Trades Union Congress In 1953, the TUC organised a boycott of newspapers and comics published by D.C. Thomson and Company Limited of Dundee because of their anti-union attitude. The company required workers to sign a Document that they would not join a trade union. In 1952, 74 printers were dismissed for union membership. Although the Document was withdrawn after the intervention of the Minister of Labour and Winston Churchill, the campaign for trade union recognition continued for many years.
