"Workers from abroad, 1948" [BW0212], 1948, Trades Union Congress
After the Second World War, there were a large number of members of the Polish Armed Forces who had fought with British forces who did not wish to return to Poland. In addition, there were 12 million refugees or displaced persons across Europe. The Government set up schemes such as the Polish Resettlement Corps and the European Volunteer Workers to recruit workers into mining, agriculture and the textile industries where there were labour shortages. |
