Description
Summary:1901-12-30 1901 1900s 6 pages John — Collenbeck — not Beck William 10309 Visited 16 Milton Road saw Mrs Collenbeck who said her husband was a porter on the G.N. Railway working at Kings Cross wages 24/- a week. The family consisted of father, mother and 2 children. The eldest a girl of 16 worked at Ladburys [where] Seven Sisters Rd where she earned 6/- a week. They rented a flat for which they paid 9/- a week, the rent was paid up to date. Insufficient Infn Mr Stewart Mead — William 10339 Visited 482 West Green Rd. This house is kept by a Mr. & Mrs. Faulkner who at first denied all knowledge of Mead, but Mrs. Faulkner afterwards said he did odd jobs for them, but only just earned his keep, on asking where Mead's father and mother where [were] Mrs. Faulkner said they lived somewhere in Willow Walk where I afterwards found them. Mr. & Mrs. Mead was not in when I called, but later in the evening I found Mrs. Mead who was considerably the worse for drink. Mrs. Mead said her husband was a labourer but had done no work for 9 or 10 weeks. The family consisted of father, mother, 1 son (William) and a daughter of 13 1/2 who lived with them. The house was evidently built for a stable, it consisted of 2 rooms, only one of which was habitable and for which the rent was 4/6 a week, but no rent had been paid for 9 weeks. Mrs. Mead said William went to live with Mrs. Faulkner last Whitsun and would not assist his parents if he could. Some neighbours afterwards informed agent that both Mr. & Mrs. Mead were often the worse for liquor and were a rough lot. HC 378/IMSW/A/1/6/8a
