Motherhood If you think you are going to have a baby, the first thing you should do is to find out from a doctor or a midwife whether you really are. This is especially important if you have not had one before. It is important because, although having a baby is a perfectly natural affair, you can understand it is bound to be rather disturbing to your body. Your lungs, and your heart, and your digestion have much more to do than before ; and unless everything is made as easy as possible for them you will feel very uncomfortable or even unwell. In any case, many little discomforts occur which can easily be remedied if you know what to do. You need advice about your food, your sleep, about exercise and rest, your clothing, your daily work, and so forth. You may feel sick, and you often get constipated ; your teeth may give you trouble. So you need someone to have a look at you from time to time to make sure that everything is going on well with you and the baby and to tell you what to do. Many mothers worry about all sorts of things while a baby is coming and then get frightened about what may be before them, though they do not like to say so. But when the mother talks about these things to a doctor or a midwife or the nurse at an Ante-natal Centre, any trouble is usually explained quite easily, and she finds it a great relief to have someone to rely upon and trust.
