description 1943-03-24 1943 1940s 1 page Rawtenstall Borough Trades Council. Secretary: MR. R. DRIVER. 12 Barnes Avenue, Oakley Estate, RAWTENSTALL, Rossendale. Our ref. RD/DA. P.C. Receiving attention 29.3.43 E.H. [?] 24th March 1943. Dear Sir, I have to draw your attention to the following resolution which was unanimously adopted at our last meeting:- "That this Trades Council calls for a complete system of Free Hospitals for all classes of work-people and their families, maintained by contributions under a Social Security Scheme, with an efficient and adequate equipment of Medical Staffs, Nurses and apparatus to deal with sickness, operational cases, industrial diseases, accidents etc.; such hospitals to be under the control of Local Government Authorities, Trades Unions etc. We call upon the Government to abolish all "Charity" maintained Hospitals, and express our strong opposition to the proposals of the British Voluntary Hospitals Association which comprises wealthy reactionaries, who are determined to leave the working classes at the mercy of charity, and who are desirous of keeping control and administration of the Hospital services, which are essential to the well-being of the Conmunity." Yours faithfully, Robert Driver, Secretary. [Stamp] 26 MAR 1943 TRADE UNION CONGRESS Sir W.M.
