description 1939 1939 1930s 4 pages GUILD OF SHE GIVES THE MOST VALUABLE & CHEERFUL SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY - [photograph] . . . UNDER THE MOST EXACTING CONDITONS. HELP US ALTER THESE CONDITIONS. WHAT OF THE FUTURE ? The extensive developments in the Hospital and Public Health Services in recent years point to only one possible conclusion, viz., the imperative necessity in the near future of centralisation and co-ordination under one authority, equalising the financial burden on the community and finally, leading to the establishment of a State Health Service. The primary causes leading to such a conclusion are: (a) The natural development and extension of N.H.I. (b) The ever-growing demands on local rate-payers arising out of the administration and development of essential County Health Services. (c) The diminishing financial support in the maintenance of voluntary hospitals and undertakings. Your professional future is inalienably co-related with these developments. Your future security depends upon your ability to safeguard and protect your professional status, co-incident with these natural developments. There is only ONE solution, and that is a unified approach, guided by those who have had a wide experience in similar legislative developments. THE REMEDY IS YOUR OWN. Florence Nightingale, a disciple of PROGRESS — ORDER — and JUSTICE, created a revolution in nursing ideas. She was ever intolerant of repression, narrowness of outlook and bad conditions. Exploitation is rampant, mainly on account of the lack of unity on the part of the nurses themselves in effective organisation. Proper and justifiable recognition of the professional status of those engaged in the Nursing Services is essential. This desirable objective will only be obtained through efficient and scientific machinery. The best medium is obviously a carefully planned and democratically controlled professional organisation by those directly engaged in the profession, possessing complete knowledge of existing conditions and the possible and positive remedies.
