Description
Summary:1927 1927 1920s 40 pages 10 TRAINING. If the probationer qualifies she signs a contract with the hospital authorities agreeing to remain until her training is completed. A few hospitals require that she agree to remain for one year after her training is completed. In general, the period of training is three years. Some hospitals require four years, but the last year usually includes special training in midwifery that secures a C.M.B. certificate. The length of training for the fever hospitals is two years, a period recognised as sufficient by the General Nursing Council. Nevertheless, ten of the hospitals spread the training over a three year period. The length of training for the cottage hospitals is usually two years. A number of them reduce it to one year. No certificate is given at the end of this time : only a statement saying that the girl has done her work satisfactorily. She is then usually passed on by the matron to a larger training school. Arrangements can be made whereby the cottage hospital is affiliated to a large hospital, and prepares the girls for the first State examination. They continue their training at the large hospital which discounts one year from their time and prepares them for the final State examination. In one case, although the period of "training" was only a year and a-half (twelve months' general training and six months' C.M.B.), the probationer was bound by agreement to stay and serve adjacent parishes for two years afterwards. PREMIUMS No premiums are exacted in the Poor Law Infirmaries. One hospital asks for a deposit of £15 repayable at close of training or if sent away. Hospitals with preliminary training schools request deposits ; two ask for a deposit of £6 6s. ; one of £7 7s. ; and one of £5 5s. A "proportionate" part of this premium or fee is returned to the girl if she leaves before the close of her training ; all of it when she completes her term. Although it is the exceptional hospital that demands the payment of an entrance deposit, they usually exact a graduated fine if the nurse's desire to leave is not a valid one. The fine varies from one month's to three months' salary. In the words of a London hospital : "Compensation is expected according to the individual circumstances if the agreement is broken. It is obviously unfair to board, lodge and pay a salary to a woman who may, directly she becomes useful and has, say, another year to serve before the agreement expires, leave and so break that agreement." In the Poor Law Infirmary contract, the nurse agrees to forfeit £5 if she breaks the agreement, but the Board of Guardians do not enforce this if there is a good reason for her wishing to go. All hospitals classify "good reasons" under three main headings : marriage, ill-health, family troubles. A number of hospitals specifically stated that : "No conditions are imposed, no refund of uniform value ; a courteous notice is all that is exacted." WAGES. The average, highest, and lowest wages received by nurses undergoing training during the first, second and third years are shown in the following tables :— TABLE (2) HOSPITAL. First Second. Third.
