description 1939-10 1939 1930s 27 pages ; illustrations BEAUTY FOR THE HOME GIRL [illustration] The home girl's beauty treatment starts the minute she springs out of her bed, and continues all the time she is setting about her household duties. She should open wide her window and take a few deep breaths of the fresh morning air, and then have a cool bath or rub down from head to foot. She flings open wide the beds to air, and while she prepares breakfast she and the kettle sing a duet together! She sweeps and dusts, changes sheets and pillow cases and plumps up beds, washes and scours, tidies and polishes with a will. What a splendid set of exercises for giving a graceful carriage, rounding the arms, developing the chest and improving the shape of neck and shoulders. Then the daily walk to do the shopping brings her back with glowing cheeks and bright eyes. When everything is spotless, our home-girl has a thorough wash and change of dress, and is ready for afternoon rest and recreation. She takes time over her meals and has them at regular hours. Three good meals a day, with plenty of water to drink in between — and no "snacks" or bits if she values her digestion and complexion! She has an interesting hobby — housecraft, of which she makes a real study, particularly in these modern days when, with the advent of electricity, so many labour-saving devices provide for cleanliness with comfort. She knows in her heart that making a happy, clean and comfortable home is the most beautiful work in the world — and the healthiest. So, my dear, when you feel discontented, look in your mirror and see how your mouth drops at the corners and how the life and light have gone out of your face — the shock will do you good! Remember that to smile is a beauty treatment in itself. [illustration] 14 177/5/8/4
