description 1939-10 1939 1930s 27 pages ; illustrations BEAUTY FOR THE BUSINESS GIRL If you go to business every day, you must manage to get up a few minutes earlier in order to go part of the way at least on "Shanks' pony." A brisk walk in the early morning is a wonderful beautifier, and counteracts that stale harassed look brought about by hours in an office occupied by people who, maybe, refuse to have the window open. Then you must allow time for a thorough and leisurely toilet. It is a terrible mistake to rush dressing, scamp the bath, and swallow your breakfast hastily. You start the day with a feeling of irritation and worry, both of which are bad for beauty. [illustration] Have a tub if possible; or if you are living in a hostel or sharing rooms with other girls, a bath on the instalment plan, behind a screen (you can always contrive one with a little ingenuity), will make you start the day with a feeling of fresh vigour. An electric fire is a great boon to the business girl, enabling her to strip and wash in her own room in comfort. Electricity, being fumeless, can be used in a room without a flue. In rainy weather wear a mackintosh, the ventilated sort, and a pair of sensible watertight shoes with gaiters. Wet feet mean colds, red noses, and inside aches. When you lunch, choose wholemeal bread and cheese with butter and salad, rather than tea and cakes. Milk, or coffee which is chiefly milk, and a banana are excellent and nourishing foods. If you knew how dependent your beauty is on drinking water — not gulping it down, but sipping it [illustration] 15 177/5/8/4
