Treasurer (pro tem.): Mr. Wilfrid Roberts, M.P. 14th January, 1938. STARVATION IN MADRID. Sir, I have read with horror that the daily bread ration in Madrid has been cut down from five to three and a half ounces. Let your readers weigh this out for themselves. It means two thin slices of an ordinary loaf. Thousands of innocent women and children are now suffering the extremes of cold and hunger on that bitter freezing wind-swept table-land. They have barely food enough to keep them alive. The icy stone houses have literally no heating of any kind. Most of the people have only a threadbare shawl or a worn-out blanket to huddle under when they try to sleep. There has been no coal in Madrid for many months, so there is neither gas nor electric light. Over and above its ambulance work properly so called, the Scottish Ambulance Unit, all of whose members are volunteers and unpaid, is struggling to help a few of these poor wretches to a modicum of food and warmth. Funds are at a very low ebb and unless generous help is given NOW, the work must be stopped. But if funds permit it is intended to convert two derelict schools into soup kitchens and add the serving of hot meals thrice daily. I am sure your warm-hearted readers will help to save a few of these miserable victims. Donations sent to Sir Daniel Stevenson, 5, Cleveden Road, Glasgow, will be gratefully acknowledged by Yours faithfully, D.M. Stevenson, Chairman, Scottish Ambulance Unit.
