Summary:1940-04-23 001-0168-005 GERMAN HONOURS FOR SPANIARDS Since the end of the Spanish war there have been many awards of German decorations to Spaniards, and vice versa. It will be remembered that when General Franco celebrated his victory in Madrid on May 19 last year, he appointed Knights of the Imperial Order of the Red Arrows -among others who had helped him in his enterprise - Herr Himmler, head of the Gestapo, and Sgr. Brocchini, chief of the Ovra, the Italian political police. Hitler has reciprocated with great generosity, and to-day many Spaniards are linked to Germany, through decorations granted to them, by ties often stronger and more binding than mere gratitude. Decorations for Journalists. Prominent journalists have been thus distinguished, and of course influenced. Among them we may mention the following: Sr. Juan Pujol, editor of the newspaper "Madrid." published in Madrid; Sr. Manuel Haloon, former editor or the Falangist newspaper ''F.E.T " (Seville), and later of "A.B.C" (Madrid.) Sr. Manuel Fernandez Cuesta (whose brother was a minister in General Franco's Cabinet), editor of the picture paper "Fotos." Sr. Victor de la Serra, editor of the Madrid newspaper "Informaciones." It is no wonder that all these papers, like the rest of the Spanish press, are such active supporters of Germany in the present war. It was a well-known fact that the Germans also exerted a very strong influence on Spanish journalists and papers in the last European war. At that time they not only subsidised many of the existing newspapers but launched some new ones. It was then estimated that 60 per cent. of the Spanish press was directly or indirectly under German influence. The position is more serious now, since the entire Spanish press is State-controlled. Editors are appointed by decree of the Minister of the Interior, Sr Serrano Suner, whose close associations with Germany and Italy are well known. Moreover the press is censored, and editors are given instructions by the Director-General of the Press in the Government how to deal with foreign news. These instructions may be summed up by saying that information from D.N.B., the German news agency, or the Italian Stefani, 292/946/1/169(i)
