description 001-0182-007 feudal and capitalistic, has perished, to give place to a Republic young, enthusiastic, eager for the work of renovation, which ought soon to put Spain at the head of the civilised countries. After some hesitation and wavering, the young Republic resolutely set itself to the solution of the economic social and political problems which confronted it. A radical transformation of the country was brought about in the economic, industrial and agrarian spheres as well as in the political and social. The inestimable wealth, material, moral and spiritual, of your wonderful people, undeveloped hitherto, received a tremendous impetus and was put at the disposal of the great mass of the population. It was, indeed, the growing and increasing success of this magnificent work of constructing a new society, which provoked the fear and the hate of the forces which had been vanquished, and which now allied themselves with the fascist powers, the enemies of progress, of social law and liberty. By treason, by violence by a foreign war, these forces have tried defeat and destroy the work of social liberation which the working classes of Spain have accomplished. But the reply of this indomitable people was a scorn of danger. Never in the whole history of the human race has any war for the defence of a country, of an ideal, of liberty, 292/946/1/184(ii)
