Dear Sir Walter Citrine, The report sent to you at the end of the year 1941 was a little extravagance we felt really necessary, as it reviewed in outline the work done by the National Joint Committee for Spanish Relief since its inception. It has, I trust, conveyed some idea of the wide ramifications of the tasks undertaken, and those which still must be handled in some form or another, in spite of greatly reduced resources and staff. We cannot at this stage go back on our responsibilities. The war has forced us to provide for the children for a much longer period than we had ever visualised, and although the labour situation has changcd considerably for aliens, making it unnecessary to provide financial maintenance for the adult refugees and for some of the older children, administration and guidance are still needed on their behalf, to enable them to obtain suitable work and training. The entry of the United States into the war has inevitably reduced the help which we were receiving for many of the younger children, and some provision must be made for the future, when we commence repatriation again. This [ ] to be temporarily discontinued after the fall of France. Will you help us to continue this urgent work? The keenness and willingness of our committee and very small staff who shoulder a heavy task, is proof of their devotion and you may be certain that every penny will be wisely and economically administered. Our work is now something more than merely humanitarian in that it gives us an opportunity to build some part of the structure of that new and better world, which we hope will provide a charter for all its peoples. The Spaniards you help us to aid here will carry away with them experiences and friendships which must work for International understanding and goodwill in their own country and in those countries to which they may emigrate in the years to come, and their gratitude for the help we give makes our work a pleasure.
