Referring to your telephone message of Monday stating that an official of your Union is desirous of adopting permanently a Spanish child, the position is extremely difficult as the National Committee for the Care of Basque Children have thought it inadvisable up to the moment to raise with the Home Office the question of permanent adoption. The present position leaves us in some doubt as to the line which the Government will take in regard to the children who are orphans. Franco may demand their return and if he takes this course the attitude of our Government to individual adoptions remains to be seen. I am, however, writing to the Secretary of the Committee personally asking her to put the request on her records so that when we are in a position to consider the principle the matter will not be overlooked. I am on the National Committee and as soon as I can let you know anything definite I will again get into touch with you. With best wishes, Yours sincerely, Assistant Secretary.
