INDEPENDENT LABOUR PARTY NATIONAL ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL Chairman : J. MAXTON. MP. Hon. Treasurer : F. W. JOWETT Telephone : Central 3196 Telegrams : Ilper, Lud, London Secretary : A. FENNER BROCKWAY, 35 St. Bride Street, London, E.C.4. 1st September, 1938. Dear Comrade I enclose a copy of a paragraph which appeared in "The Scotsman" of August 24th. Our information direct from Barcelona is that the authorities have published a statement that the summary of the accusation against the P.O.U.M. leaders was at the disposal of the lawyers for the defence until August 30th and after that the date for the trial would be set. It is evident that arrangements will be pushed ahead for the trial. We have sent you already a statement regarding the accusation and meeting the charges for which the Communist Party has first responsibility. This is not a question of endorsing the policy of the P.O.U.M., but of defending the right of fair trial and preventing political persecution. The official Socialist parties on the continent have protested strongly against the character of the Tribunal of Espionage and High Treason, and only this week "Le Populaire" carries a strong warning. I hope you will be ready to cable or write to Senor Negrin on the matter. Yours fraternally, Fenner Brockway General Secretary. Enclosure
