Description
Summary:011-0040-001 Copy 10, Downing Street Whitehall, 14th September, 1937. Dear Mr. Bevin, I write on the Prime Minister's behalf to acknowledge the receipt or the telegram, signed by you and other leaders of the Trades Unions and Labour Movement, concerning the safety of five thousand councillors, civil servants, municipal councillors and priests at Santander. Similar appeals from various quarters have already been made to His Majesty's Government, but no evidence has yet been received by the Government, that severe measures are, in fact, contemplated at Santander, so that it does not appear that any intervention on the part of the Government, is required. The British Consul at Santander, who has now returned to his post, has, however, been instructed to keep His Majesty's Government fully informed as regards the position, and the question will not be lost, sight of. Yours very truly, (signed) O.S. Clev........ Ernest Bevin Esq. Copied KMS/4 292/946/11/40
