description 011-0094-001 FOR THE MEETING OF THE IFTU EXECUTIVE OF THE 29TH AND 30TH APRIL, 1937, IN PARIS THE SITUATION IN SPAIN Letter from the Union General de Trabajadores de España (UGT), Spanish National Trade Union Centre, of the 23rd March, 1937: Dear Comrades, A meeting of the Executive Committee of the UGT was held so that the delegates we sent to London could report back on our participation in this conference. The Executive Committee unanimously approves our effort and expresses its regret, as it feels that the resolutions adopted at the conference do not correspond with the aspirations of the workers at this dramatic time, and can not have a good effect on our fight for independence and freedom. The Committee thinks that on your side you should consider the advisability of all the anti-Fascist forces of the world concentrating their efforts on helping Spain, creating the instrument which will save world democracy from Fascist aggression. Yours sincerely, (signed) Pascual Tomás, Letter from the Union General de Trabajadores de España (UGT), Spanish National Trade Union Centre, of the 6th April 1937: Dear Comrades, We learn daily through the press of the arrival in Spain of medical supplies, food supplies and clothing sent for the combattants by the sections of your International; these consignments are accompanied by delegations of the respective organisations. On their arrival at Valencia, these delegations are met by elements belonging to political organisations which have no connection with the UGT, which sometimes take action with the International Red Aid and proceed to distribute the gifts which have been brought without the UGT knowing anything at all about who has sent the consignment, where it is delivered or who is in charge of the goods sent to Spain. As this represents an anomaly which makes very difficult the work of solidarity for our cause which the circumstances demand, we regard it as indispensable for you to ask all the sections of the International to inform the UGT of all that they are sending to Spain, so that we can state in the press that the consignments are coming from the IFTU, and can make known, in the way required by the circumstances, the solidarity which is being evinced. Yours sincerely, (signed) Pascual Tomás. B. 4/37 Nr 28 20/4/37 H/sz 292/946/11/94
