International WMC/WJB/MS/1,388 22nd August, 1939. PRIVATE. Rt. Hon. Viscount Halifax, K.G., G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., Foreign Secretary, Foreign Office, S.W.1. Dear Lord Halifax, SENOR PASCUAL TOMAS. I am taking the liberty of writing to you again on the subject of Senor Pascual Tomas. You were good enough in May last to arrange for enquiries to be made with respect to the safety of his wife and daughters, and on the 15th June informed me that your Consul in Valencia had been able to visit them. Senor Tomas has now written to me that one of our International Trade Union Federations has handed to him some money and he is very anxious, if possible, to send it to his wife whom he fears may be in great need. He is unable to send it in to Spain direct from Toulouse where he is living, and I was wondering whether it would be possible to arrange for him to have the money transferred to us here in London with a view to having it transmitted to his wife through your Consul. Would you be so kind as to give this suggestion your consideration and to let me know whether you think it is a practicable one? If it were at all possible now to obtain passports for these people for leaving Spain that would be, of course, the best step to take, but I assume that that is still impossible. I indeed hesitate to approach you knowing how perturbed you must be owing to the general international situation, but I have no other means at my disposal in order to assist a man whom I have known for a long time and learned to respect. Yours faithfully, General Secretary.
