TELEPHONE: TRUDAINE 56-34 COMPTE CHEQUE POSTAL: PAUL PERRIN No 2062-08 PARIS 10, RUE DE CHATEAUDUN - PARIS-IXe Paris, June 19th 1939. Fonds Matteotti of England Transport House, Smith Square, Londres. S.W.1. Dear Sirs, We herewith send you a copy of a letter we have addressed to the ministry of Foreign Affairs of your Government. As you will notice, it concerns the urgent question of the Spanish refugees and the problem of the repartition of a great many of them amongst the different countries of the world. As we have exposed in our letter to the Governments, many are the agricultural and industrial workers and specialists of all professions amongst the refugees who find themselves condemned to forced idleness at the moment. We do not think it necessary to inform you of the extremely precarious and terrible situation of these men, women and children who have been shut up in concentration camps for months. We are certain that you understand the urgence of the problem. For this reason an International Conference will be held in Paris on July 15th and 16th, with a view of elaborating concrete proposals for a rapid solution of the entire problem. We are sure to find, in this enterprise, the fervent and unanimous collaboration of all persons and associations who are familiar with the unhappy situation of the refugees. In order that the International Conference can establish a practical plan for the international repartition of the refugees, it is necessary for us to know the possibilities of emigration to each country and of the integration of agricultural and industrial labour into its national production. We would be very obliged if you would look into this question. In particular, if you could arrange interviews with the Ministry concerned and thus obtain the concrete indications which we need we should be very grateful to receive this information before the July 14th so that it may serve in the work of the Conference. We thank you very much and will be sure to let you know the results of the Conference and of any negotiations we may have with your Government. Yours faithfully, PAUL PERRIN. General Secretary. 292/946/26/59(i)
