19 August 1936. Issued by TUC The money being raised in this country on behalf of the International Fund for the relief of distress in Spain shows a marked increase. The rate of individual subscriptions is well maintained. The Transport & General Workers' Union have made a contribution of £1,000 and are making arrangements for special collections to be taken in their Branches. From the beginning of August the International Federation of Trade Unions and the Labour and Socialist International have had representatives in Spain who throughout have preserved the closest possible contact with the Socialist and Trade Union Headquarters, in consultation with whom, a Joint Committee of the two Internationals is administering the Fund. The first need was for anti-gangrene and anti-tetanus serums for the wounded. During the past three weeks supplies have been forwarded to render assistance to the hospitals and field ambulances to prevent infection from wounds. To secure supplies in ample quantities has been no easy matter. The peace-time production of such serums is relatively small and a very wide field has had to be covered to secure supplies which it has been possible to send over. Up to date over £4,000 has been expended on these supplies alone. The danger of food scarcity in certain areas has been relieved by the consignment of supplies. Those with experience in the Great War know the value of cigarettes to the wounded and to those engaged in the heat of conflict. Tobacco is scarce in Spain and huge quantities of cigarettes have been sent by special request.
