FIS WMC/WJB/AC/896 762 International 20th July, 1937, Mr. W. Schevenels, International Federation of Trade Unions, 9, avenue d'Orsay, Paris VIIe. Dear Comrade Schevenels, INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY FUND. We are in receipt of your circular letter of 19th instant, in which you ask us for particulars about the subscriptions which we received for the International Solidarity Fund, also details about the goods despatched, and any other forms of relief carried out by us. You will have received from us our communication of 7th July, in which we indicate the total amount received to date. You might add the following information in case you are not aware of it. Consignments of food and clothing have been purchased and shipped from England to Santander and Bilbao. Publicity had to be avoided, in order to ensure the safe arrival of the vessels; but to give an example of the relief afforded in this way we should mention that in the steamship "Backworth" a consignment worth about £2,500, consisting of sugar, fish, bacon, milk, biscuits, etc., was loaded by the Co-operative Wholesale Society on behalf of the British Trades Union Congress and the Labour Party. In addition, there has been sent to Valencia a consignment of clothing, such as raincoats, shirts, suitings, etc., to the value of £1,000. The General Council and the Labour Party Executive decided to co-operate in the work of assisting to bring over 4,000 of the Basque children to England and caring for them on their arrival. A special appeal was issued for this particular work. If there are any other details you would like us to send to you, will you please let us know. Yours faithfully, General Secretary.
