S. MIDDLETON (Victoria 9434) PARLIAMENTARY LABOUR PARTY Secretary: H. SCOTT LINDSAY (Whitehall 6240) Ref: HVT/DT/819. 3rd April, 1939. In reply please quote:- CIRCULAR NO. 89 (1938-39). TO SECRETARIES OF ALL TRADES COUNCILS. Dear Sir (Madam), INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY FUND. In pursuance of our procedure of the past two years, I am enclosing copies of a pictorial statement of the work of the International Solidarity Fund to date. We desire the widest possible circulation of the statement in order that the work performed may be understood and subscribers be made aware of the good use made of their subscriptions. In view of the enormous commitments involved it is hoped that the appeal for the continuance of support will meet with an adequate response. The latest phase of the problem is that we have had to accept responsibility for over three hundred Spanish seamen who have been living on Spanish boats in British ports which have now been handed over to the Franco Government. These Spanish comrades cannot safely return to Spain, and pending arrangements for their future the International Solidarity Fund has accepted financial responsibility for their maintenance. In view of the urgent need for funds for this and other commitments we hope your Council will make further efforts to assist in securing contributions to the International Solidarity Fund. Further supplies of the enclosed report may be obtained at the rate of 3/- per 100 copies post free immediately on receipt of your order. Yours sincerely, H. V. TEWSON, ) J. S. MIDDLETON, ) Joint H. SCOTT LINDSAY.) Secretaries. Encl. 292/946/32/76
