Press Statement issued to Daily Herald. 9th. February, 1939. The International Federation of Trade Unions have issued an urgent appeal to all affiliated countries, pointing out the plight of refugees from Spain. In addition to the special relief work which is required to cope with the enormous problem on the Spanish French frontier, the work of sending further supplies of food to the districts of Madrid, Valencia, Alicante, etc., has still to be continued. They point out that over 150,000 women and children and aged persons have crossed the French frontier in the last few days and that their state of exhaustion is indescribable. The largest part of the relief work rests with the International and French Movements, and the strain is so great that it is feared that the effort cannot be continued unless further funds are received. The International Solidarity Fund was responsible for a large number of children in homes in Catalonia and all these children have been evacuated. Over 400 have already been sent to Belgium. The Spanish Committee of the Fund which for the last few months has been working in Barcelona has moved to the Spanish French frontier and is actively engaged upon relief work amongst the refugees. The need is desperate; lives are at stake; send your contributions to the National Council of Labour, Transport House, Smith Square, London, S.W.1. Contributions which are sent to the International Solidarity Fund will be immediately placed at the disposal of headquarters of the Fund in Paris. Donations should be sent to the National Council of Labour.
