description 032-0117-001 Scottish Trades Union Congress General Council PHONE CENTRAL 3179 SCOTTISH T.U. CONGRESS COPY FOR INFORMATION 33 ELMBANK CRESCENT GLASGOW, C.2. WILLIAM ELGER. J.P. SECRETARY 30th January 1939. To the Secretary of the Trades Council, Labour Party, or Co-operative Organisation, named in the address. Ref.C.94. (1938-39). Dear Comrade, DEMOCRATIC SPAIN STILL KEEPS FOOD SCOTTISH FOODSHIP COLLECTING SCHEME You are asked to give this letter your immediate attention. For over two years Spain has dramatically arrested the attention of all Democracies: for over two years the plight of the civilian population has aroused the conscience of all democrats. Lacking food, clothing, and medical supplies the magnificence of their morale commands our ready response to their clamant call for assistance. The General Council is organising a Scottish Foodship and a scheme specially designed for obtaining contributions regularly from those willing to assist has been launched. There are enclosed 2 Books of 3d. Vouchers and 1 Book of 1/-Vouchers - each Book being valued 10/-. Your Council/Party/Organisation is asked to obtain collectors immediately so that the Vouchers may be exchanged at once for the contributions stated. As soon as the Books are sold please send back the covers with cash. Do not hold up cash - money is needed NOW. More Books will be sent on application. In addition your Council/Party/Organisation is asked to set up a Collecting Committee (or the whole Council/Party/Organisation could so act) for the purpose of guaranteeing continuous financial help by a diversity of methods such as house to house collections, collections at works, football matches, etc., etc. Pending the maturing of this Collecting Scheme your Council/Party/Organisation is requested to make a grant from its own Funds if it is in a position to do so. It is fully realised that your Council/Party/Organisation and many of its members will have contributed already, and are continuing to contribute, to funds for the relief of Democratic Spain. But food is so desperately needed that intensified efforts are imperative. These efforts must continue until the dire necessity of our Spanish Comrades no longer stands out as a reproach to us all. You are asked to act quickly. The destiny of all peace-loving and democratic peoples may be endangered by hesitation. Yours fraternally, William Elger Secretary. 292/946/32/117
