9020. 9434 Our Ref: WMC/FC/EK/1358. 24th June, 1938. Mr. G. Jeger, Spanish Medical Aid Committee, 24, New Oxford Street, London, W.C.1. Dear Mr. Jeger, APPEAL. Your letter of the 14th instant has now been considered by the National Council of Labour. I think you will appreciate that the International Solidarity Fund for which we are responsible in this country must rely mainly upon our own local and national organisations for support. Repeated appeals have been sent to them and many organisations have still our latest appeal under consideration. The International Solidarity Fund supplies, as far as possible, medicaments, ambulances, etc., and, of course, they are entirely responsible for the hospital at Onteniente. We have recently issued a report to our affiliated bodies on the work performed by the fund and we are in the position of having a very small balance left in hand, one which is quite inadequate for a continuance of assistance on the scale we have been rendering recently. With our own commitments in mind and believing that we must first look to our own organisations for financial support and having regard also to the repeated appeals which have been made and will still require to be made, the National Council of Labour were compelled to decline the request made in your letter. Yours sincerely, Joint Secretary.
