The Chances of Democracy / by Dawid Warszawski[from: KOS, no. 59 (3 September 1984)]This article was published last year on the fourth anniversary of the founding of Solidarity. It draws parallels between the situation and developments in Chile and Spain under military dictatorship and the situation in Poland. "KOS" is a fortnightly publication of the Committee of Social Defense [Komitet Oporu Społecznego (KOS)]. Warszawski is the pseudonym of a major underground political commentator.
Our Interview[from: Czas, no. 1(2) (1985)]These are extensive excerpts from an interview with one of the original founders of the Citizens' Committee Against Violence (KOPP) in Warsaw. Various such committees under different names have been emerging throughout Poland. "Czas" [Time] is a periodical published in Poznań.
We Decided to Give It a Try - A Conversation with an Activist from the Workers' Self-management Council in Polfa[from: Tygodnik Mazowsze, no. 126 (25 April 1985)]Polfa is a pharmaceutical enterprise with more than one plant in Poland. It is not clear from this interview in which plant the self-management council exists. The name the council is given, "Rada Pracownicza," does not make clear, either, whether members of the management also take part in it. The interview was published in one of the main Solidarity weeklies in Warsaw.
What's New in Piła?[from: Solidarność Poznań, no. 2(38) (25 January 1985)]This item by a correspondent from Piła, dated December 1984, appeared in the Poznań Solidarity underground fortnightly. The correspondent describes the extent of Solidarity activity in the small provincial town north of Poznań.
Solidarity in Siedlce[from: Tygodnik Mazowsze, no. 120 (7 March 1985)]This is a brief account of the activities of the Committee of Social Resistance [Komitet Oporu Społecznego (KOS)] in Siedlce (population 60,000), a provincial town east of Warsaw. The Committees (or Circles) of Social Resistance are a nationwide informal network of cells that came into existence after the imposition of martial law.
Financial Report for the Year 1984[from: Iskra Wolności, no. 2(69) (15-31 January 1985)]The financial report on underground Solidarity activities was published in the fortnightly factory bulletin "Iskra Wolności" [Spark of Freedom], produced in the Agromet-Pilmet plant in Wrocław, which makes farm equipment. It is known from similar reports that the figures are given in percentages rather than cash figures in the interests of security.
Financial Report[from: Jutrzenka, no. 69 (16-30 June 1985)]This is a brief financial report of the underground Solidarity organization in the Pafawag Rolling Stock factory in Wrocław as published in its fortnightly bulletin "Jutrzenka" [Dawn]. The enormous increase in expenses in May is due to the payment of fines, lawyers' fees, and grants following the May Day and Third of May demonstrations.
This Is Just Like Łódź: Overworked Women and Drunken Men[from: Tygodnik Mazowsze, no. 127 (2 May 1985)]The main Solidarity weekly for the Warsaw area, in its regular series, "From the Life of the Working Class," prints extracts of various conversations with workers in the Marchlewski Textile Works in the "Polish Manchester," Łódź. |
