Description
Summary:Extracts from Polish underground publications compiled and translated into English by the RFE Polish Publication Unit for broadcasting purposes. Introductions to most articles are provided by RFE staff, and items are compiled in issues based mainly on theme and date. Maciej Poleski Accuses General Kiszczak[from: Tygodnik Mazowsze, no. 143/144 (24 October 1985)]This is the full text of an official document addressed to the State Prosecutor by Czesław Bielecki (who wrote in "Tygodnik Mazowsze" under the pseudonym Maciej Poleski, hence the title) about the false accusations made against him by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Czesław Kiszczak. Bielecki, an architect by profession and also a designer of posters, is a well-known member of the opposition. He was in hiding after the imposition of martial law and was arrested in April 1985. Maciej Poleski Begins a Hunger Strike[from: Tygodnik Mazowsze, no. 143/144 (24 October 1985)]Printed in the same issue as item no.1 above, this letter was undated. It can be deduced, however, that it was written on the day of the elections for the Sejm, on October 13. A Talk with Jan Lityński[from: Lityński, Jan. Solidarność: Znaki, Zapytania, Proby Odpowiedzi. Warsaw: Słowo, 1985.]This interview was included in a collection of essays published clandestinely under the above title. Lityński, a 39-year-old mathematician, began his oppositional activities and was first imprisoned in 1968. He then became a member of the Workers' Defense Committee [Komitet Obrony Robotników (KOR)] and later a Solidarity adviser. Interned on 13 December 1981, then released, and once again arrested in June 1982, he failed to return to prison when allowed out for a visit on a special pass and has been active in the underground since 1983. He is a member of the Solidarity Voivodeship Committee for the Mazowsze (Warsaw) Region. The interview seems to have been conducted in early 1985. An Interview with Zbigniew Wiśniewski[from: Feniks, no. 100 (13 June 1985)]For its 100th issue, the Solidarity weekly from Gorzów Wielkopolski, a city with a population of 100,000 lying about 400 kilometers west of Warsaw, interviewed the chairman of the underground Regional Executive Committee of Solidarity for that area.
