Thomas Heise, noted documentary filmmaker from the former GDR, takes a trip to France to visit his brother Andreas. His brother lives there in a rather unusual situation. Andreas is a chef. He left the city and his favourite bar in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district. He has been living in France for the past year, in the mountains, in the attic of Micha and Yvonne's guesthouse. Andreas thought he had come here to die: three heart attacks, an operation, and nothing left to live for. But things have turned out differently. Andreas has fallen in love with Vanina, wife of the blacksmith and mother of three sons. Micha finances the little guesthouse with his work in cardiac wards in Switzerland and Germany. He is a cardio-technician; as Yvonne used to be. She is now taking time for the children. Andreas works for Micha and Yvonne. He cooks for them and for the few summer guests. It is October and the filmmaker's visit is short but he wants to talk to his big brother about Micha, his friend. The man who spied on them for the Stasi. |
