Description
Summary:Verzio FF Submission The film tells the story of Ruben and Joachim, two young Belgians aged 17 and 16 who chose to participate in a special program of rehabilitation provided by Oikoten. Since 1982, Oikoten has offered alternative solutions for young offenders and seriously disadvantaged youngsters. By adopting the Greek word Oikoten (“away from home, away from your native country”), the organization offers the choice between a long stretch in prison or a long walk. The daily routine and the quite strenuous physical efforts is mentally liberating and teaches these adolescents respect, responsibility and the importance of values. Oikoten adopted the strategy of getting them away from a corrosive environment, broadening their horizons and challenging them to take on a new role. Ruben and Joachim travel over 2500 km on foot between Belgium and Spain. While following their journey, this film manages to show that positive changes can occur, that offering a new chance in life is better than social exclusion and putting people behind bars may not be the only solution.
