Description
Summary:Coproduction: Belgium, France. Verzio FF Submission Duration: 00:57:00 “You are Served” tells the story of Indonesian women, who hope to improve their life perspectives and to support their families by going abroad to work as maids. Thousands of women pour into hundreds of training centres that teach them how to operate washing machines and microwave ovens, how to welcome guests and how to exercise rules of etiquette and first and foremost patience. The stay in these training centres is expensive, the duration of stay is unpredictable, and the destination of employment is not known in advance. The women cling to their hope of a better life and put up with the terrible conditions in these training centres until having found a job as maids. The documentary illustrates in a disillusioned and observant manner the perceptions and expectations of these young women as well as the mindset and rationale of their recruiters. The film is built around the letters these women send back home which impressively describe the situations of abuse and exploitation amounting to slavery. They provide an unseen testimony for all the deceived dreams, the felt numbness and the committed injustices.
