Their great difficulty is that they have not the arms without which all their bravery cannot succeed. The spectre of bolshevism is held up before us as one of the dangers. We may all be bolshevik one day in the sense that we shall support that policy. In Spain there is also the process of revolution, - and in a country which has never undergone a great revolution, which has many actually feudal elements, and where the land system is one of the most reactionary in Europe. The Spaniards have had the wisdom to subordinate these revolutionary aspirations to the needs of the war. The revolution is made secondary. It is said that Communism is growing in Spain. If it is then the reason is not difficult to understand. It is that the Spanish people have felt that Russia, above all, has stood by their side in their fight. To my mind it does not matter whether Spain goes Communist or Socialist, what matters is that they should be free to choose their form of Government. There has been a great deal of foolish talk about mediation in Spain. To my mind it is unthinkable in a struggle of such bitterness. It is impossible to consider the policy of the British Government throughout the Spanish events,
