DAME MAY WHITTY and other leading London Citizens. 5th January 1939 Dear Miss Nancy Adams, In view of the increasing threat of starvation to the women and children of Spain, whore this winter over three million refugees and nearly a million children are in urgent need of assistance in Catalonia alone, it has been decided to ask the Foreign Secretary to receive a deputation, representing British women prominent in every walk of life, to urge upon him the following requests: 1. That the British Government should make additional grants, following upon the grant of £20,000 already made, to the International Commission for the Assistance of Child Refugees in Spain. 2. That efforts should be made to obtain for Spanish Relief, particularly among the refugee population, surpluses of potatoes, herrings, milk, etc at the disposal of the various marketing boards operating in this country. 3. That the British Government should support the Spanish Government's request, printed in the Bray-Webster report to the League of Nations, for credits to deal with the refugee problem. 4. That British ships carrying foodstuffs to the civilian population of Spain should receive the protection of the British Navy. 5. That belligerent rights should not be granted to General Franco, since the evident object of the demand for such rights is to facilitate the starvation of the civilian population of Spain, including the women and children. We have already obtained the support of many prominent women, and we very much hope that you will kindly allow your name to be added to the list of those making up the deputation, which it is proposed should be sent on February 9th. Yours sincerely, MARGERY CORBETT-ASHBY, A.
