Summary:1911 1880-1914 "The National Insurance Act of 1911" [T0177.jpg], 1911, United Newspapers Ltd The National Insurance Act of 1911 was introduced by David Lloyd George, Chancellor of the Exchequer in Asquith's Liberal Government to provide sickness and unemployment benefit. The Act gave trade unions an important role in the administration of benefits, although there was some opposition to a contributory scheme. Old Age pensions had been introduced in 1908 on a non-contributory basis, financed out of general taxation.
