Summary:016b-0028-001 NATIONAL JOINT COMMITTEE FOR SPANISH RELIEF CHAIRMAN: THE DUCHESS OF ATHOLL, M.P. VICE-CHAIRMEN: THE EARL OF LISTOWEL MISS ELEANOR RATHBONE, M.P. HON SECRETARIES: MR. D.R. GRENFELL, M.P. CAPT. J.R.J. MACNAMARA, M.P. MR. WILFRID ROBERTS, M.P. HON TREASURER: VISCOUNT CECIL OF CHELWOOD, P.C., K.C. JOINT ORGANISING SECRETARIES: MISS BETTY L. ARNE MRS. MARY M. MILLER 53, MARSHAM STREET, LONDON, S.W.1. TELEPHONE: VICTORIA 2168 1st November, 1937. Dear Sir or Madam, Instead of a bulletin we are sending you this month the enclosed pamphlet, just issued, Famine Faces A Million in Spain. It shows in temperate language a position of critical gravity among the refugees of Eastern Spain, which threatens famine and horrible epidemics this winter unless large scale relief is given. To meet this vitally urgent need the National Joint Committee is making an appeal for winter relief on a scale it has not before attempted. Our present commitments, e.g. the Basque children in this country and the children at Puigcerda, must be maintained. Yet if we are to meet the situation at all these commitments should be only a small part of what we do. In this first stage of our appeal we are now turning again to all those who have so generously helped in the past, first to give again, in money or kind; second to do all they can to spread the appeal to others. We can supply any number of the enclosed pamphlet at 9d. a dozen; there are also available throw-away leaflets, a six page folder (illustrated), an appeal envelope and, shortly, three special posters. We will gladly send you copies of these if you can make use of them. Finally, if there is no relief committee in your district we beg you earnestly to consider getting one together. Yours sincerely, Katherine Atholl Chairman. SEE printed matter 292/946/16b/31
