Description
Summary:1943-02-19 1943 1940s 2 pages WOOLWICH ARSENAL SHOP STEWARDS COMMITTEE. The Rt Hon Winston Churchill, P.C., M.P. 10 Downing Street, Westminster.S.W.1. 19th February 1943. Dear Sir, I am instructed to inform you that at a meeting of the above Committee held today, the following resolution was unanimously adopted :- "We desire to protest against the attitude of the Government with regard to the Beveridge Report, and its refusal to set up a Ministry of Social Security. In our opinion, the setting up of such a Ministry would give a guarantee of the Governments desire that victory should be followed by the inaurguration [inauguration] of an efficient and equitable social system. The Governments refusal removes the only real incentive to sustained war effort by the men we represent. In the winning of the war as an end in itself we have no interest whatever; but only in so far as victory may be a preliminary to a better social order." I am, Sir, yours faithfully, Francis E. Glasson. Secretary. 292/150.5/5/162
