Summary:2001 1951-1960 "Pat Lowry 1920-2001" [BW0035], Trades Union Congress After the Second World War, John Patrick 'Pat' Lowry worked in the personnel department of the Engineering Employers' Federation, becoming director of industrial relations in 1965. In 1970, he moved to the British Leyland Motor Corporation, later British Leyland, becoming director of industrial relations in 1975. He was Chairman of the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas), from 1981 until 1987. Lowry served on countless courts of inquiry, including the Grunwick dispute in 1977, and the Barbican and Horseferry Road building disputes of 1967. He was chairman of the CBI industrial relations and wages committee and a member of its employment policy committee . He was knighted in 1985.
