Description
Summary:Extracts from Polish underground publications compiled and translated into English by the RFE Polish Publication Unit for broadcasting purposes. Introductions to most articles are provided by RFE staff, and items are compiled in issues based mainly on theme and date. Us and Them / by Jan Lityński[from: Tygodnik Mazowsze, no. 110 (13 December 1984)]This is a commentary about political circumstances related to the murder of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. The author, a former KOR member and editor of Robotnik, has been in hiding since June 1983 when he failed to return to prison where he had been detained without charge. Lityński's comment was published in a major Warsaw underground weekly, Tygodnik Mazowsze. He speaks in his own name, but there is reason to believe that his views are shared by many people in Poland. The editors of Tygodnik Mazowsze have cut the text slightly and added the headlines. Report by the Primate's Social Council on the Situation of Young People[from: Tu Teraz, no. 29 (15 September 1984)]The Warsaw underground paper "Tu Teraz" [Here, Now] published fragments of the "Introductory Report on the Situation of Young People and the Tasks Facing the Church in the Sphere of Education and Upbringing" prepared by the Primate's Social Council at the end of 1982 and the beginning of 1983, "Tu Teraz" published the report without the council's knowledge. I Felt There Was More Freedom There[from: Hutnik, no. 17(89) (9 October 1984)]This is an interview with a teenage participant in the Workers' Pilgrimage to Częstochowa on 30 September 1984 that was published in the weekly of the Lenin Foundry in Nowa Huta. The Independent Association of Students[from: Komunikat, no. 19 (July-September 1984)]The Independent Association of Students [Niezależne Zrzeszenie Studentó (NZS)] was founded in September 1980 and made illegal shortly after the imposition of martial law. This article traces its brief history. The NZS continues to be active underground. "Komunikat" [Communiqué] is published by the Wrocław University and Technical University boards of NZS. Apart from the university and technical university, other colleges in Wrocław have informal NZS groups. Number 19 of "Komunikat" is a special issue prepared for the start of the academic year to introduce new students to academic life. [Student] Self-Government[from: Komunikat, no. 19 (July-September 1984)]This is an account of the Student Self-Government Committees that were introduced into Polish colleges and universities during the Solidarity period. The Association of Polish Students[from: Komunikat, no. 19 (July-September 1984)]In this article the now officially disbanded Independent Association of Students [Niezależne Zrzeszenie Studentó (NZS)] in Wrocław gives an account of the officially sanctioned students' union, the Association of Polish Students [Zrzeszenie Studentów Polskich (ZSP)]. A Red Alarm for Colleges[from: Tygodnik Mazowsze, no. 105 (15 November 1984)]The Solidarity underground publication for the Warsaw area comments on the threat to the already minimal autonomy of institutions of higher education posed by an amendment proposed by the Ministry of Science, Higher Education, and Technology. Rock Music in Poland after August 1980 / by Kapiszon[from: Myśli, no. 1 (August 1984)]The author of this article sets out to introduce the adult world to the rock scene in Poland today and to convince them that punks and hippies are as much a part of the opposition as they themselves. "Myśli" [Thoughts] is published by members of Fighting Solidarity in Wrocław.
