"London Carmen's Trade Union sash, 1890s" [T0278.jpg], 1890s
Unions often adopted the regalia of Freemasons craft guilds and friendly societies. Sashes were worn by branch officers, march stewards and banner-bearers and were usually elaborate designs on silk or velvet, heavily embroidered with silver or gold thread. This velvet Carmen's sash, presented to H. Crump, is a typical example with its inscription, insignia of the Union, surmounted by an 'all-seeing-eye'.
The London Carmen's Trade Union was established in 1888, renamed the National Union of Vehicle Workers in 1914 and amalgamated with other unions to form the Transport and General Workers Union in 1922. |
