description 1936 1918-1939 "Spanish Civil War - Ann Murray, volunteer nurse, 1936" [T0319.jpg], 1936 During the first week of the Fascist rebellion, the Republican Government made an international appeal for medical assistance. In London, the Spanish Medical Aid Committee was established on 8 August 1936 and the first medical unit vehicles, supplies and personnel left for Spain on 23 August 1936. As the battle front moved, casualty clearing stations were established in any available building. On the Ebro front, casualties were treated in caves and a railway tunnel. Ann Murray, was from a strong socialist family in Edinburgh. Her two brothers Thomas and George were also fighting in the British battalion of the International Brigade. These photographs show her working as an operating theatre sister in a hospital train.
