British Restaurants, established as local communal feeding centres in 1941, were renamed Civic Restaurants in 1946. Originally for those made homeless after air raids, they later became open to all. By the end of the war, there were 2000 restaurants nationwide, serving 600,000 meals each day. This photograph shows the Fishmongers Company banqueting hall, made available to the London County Council for use as a restaurant. 1000 lunches were served daily. |
