Description
Summary:1890 1880-1914 "Emblem and membership certificate of the Amalgamated Association of Card and Blowing Room Operatives, 1890" [EP0074], 1890 By the 1880s, women made up a large proportion of workers in the cotton industry, particularly in the cardroom where material was prepared for the spinners. The Amalgamated Association of Card and Blowing Room Operatives was launched in 1886 and began to recruit the women. However, women's wages in the industry remained low and by 1906, women were earning a third less than male cardroom workers and two-thirds less than male spinners. This emblem was designed by Alexander Gow in 1890.
