These photographs are from a Salvation Army publication "Organised empire migration and settlement" published in 1930. The SA Women's Migration Scheme was inaugurated in 1916, initially to relocate war widows with children. After 1918, increasingly large numbers of single women who had been trained for jobs vacated by enlisted men found themselves unemployed and in financial hardship. Emigration to parts of the Empire, mainly to work in domestic service, was regarded as a solution to this problem. Between 1901-1924, over one and a half million people left the UK for the Dominions. |
