| description | "Collection: Antwerpse Socialistische Turngouw (AST); Biografie: De stichting van de Antwerpse Socialistische Turngouw (AST) vond plaats op 14 december 1919 onder impuls van de afgevaardigden van de bestaande socialistische turnkringen waaronder Volharding in Boom en De Toekomst in Antwerpen. Voorzitter werd A. Hoedemaekers. Het gouwvaandel werd overhandigd tijdens het 1e gouwfeest op 9 augustus 1920. Meer dan 1.500 turners schaarden zich rond dit symbool. In 1923 kwam het eerste nummer van De Volksturner van de pers. Tot november 1931 verscheen het blad regelmatig, vanaf dan sporadisch. De Volksturner wordt vanaf 1945 bondsorgaan. De klassiek geworden gouwfeesten vormen een jaarlijks hoogtepunt. Dank zij het in 1930 opgerichte technisch comité die het olympisch turnen onder haar bevoegdheid heeft, leverde de AST bekwame elementen voor de nationale ploeg.
